Cautions & Contraindications:
- Contraindicated in those with spontaneous sweating or deficiency of either blood or qi, use with caution in those without intense excess or heat.
Actions & Indications:
- Induces sweating and releases the exterior: for patterns of exterior heat with head and body aches and an absence of sweating. This is one of the few cool, acrid herbs that is a strong diaphoretic. It is sometimes prescribed by itself for this purpose.
- Vents rashes and stops itching: hastens the full expression of measles or other rashes and therby accelerates resolution of the disease. Also used for wind rash.
- Promotes urination and reduces swelling: for hot superficial edema, primarily when it affects the upper body and is accompanied by urinary difficulty.
