Dosage: 3-9g. This is separately dissolved then added to the other decocted herbs.

Key Characteristics: Tonifies Liver blood, moistens Lung yin, replenishes Kidney essence, stops bleeding.

Cautions & Contraindications:

  • Because of its heavy, cloying effect on the digestion, it is contraindicated in those with Spleen and Stomach deficiency, focal distention in the epigastrium, or diarrhea.

Actions & Indications:

  • Tonifies the Blood: for such symptoms as dizziness, sallow or pale complexion, and palpitations due to blood deficiency. Can be used as a stand-alone herb or melted in warm rice or millet wine.
  • Nourishes the blood and stops bleeding: for any type of bleeding, but best for consumptive disorders with coughing of blood, blood in the stool, excessive menstrual bleeding, or uterine bleeding.
  • Nourishes and moistens the yin: for yin deficiency with such symptoms as irritability and insomnia in the aftermath of a febrile disease. Also used for dry Lung cough due to yin deficiency or consumption.
