Indications:
Alternating Chills/fever, vomiting, irritability and despondency (mood related). - With excess dryness and heat in the yangming stage, add Shi Gao and Zhi Mu
- Heat in the chest in the shaoyang stage, add Huang Lian
- With excess heat and toxicity, add Jin Yin Hua, Lian Qiao, and Pu Gong Yin
- Abdominal fullness and distention, add Hou Po, Mu Xiang, and Qing Pi
- When there is severe pain, add Yan Hu Suo and Chuan Liang Zi
- For otitis media, add Long Dan Cao
- For parotitis, add Bo He and Ban Lan Gen
- Gastroenteritis and fever, add Zhu Ru, Sha Ren, and Chen Pi
- Jaundice, add Yin Chen, Zhi Zi, and Jin Qian Cao; or Yin Chen Hao Tang
- For gallstones, add Jin Qian Cao, Hai Jin Sha, Yu Jin, and Ji Nei Jin
- Contraindicated in patients with Spleen and Stomach deficiencies
- Avoid cold or raw, pungent or spicy, and oily or greasy foods while taking this formula

Preparation:
Source Text - Decoct the ingredients in approximately 12 cups of water until 6 cups remain. The ingredients are removed, and the strained decoction is reduced until 3 cups remain. This is taken warm in three equal parts over the course of a day.
Modern Text - Prepared as a decoction. Present day practitioners use 12-15g of Chai Hu and Zhi Ban Xia, 6-9g of Sheng Jiang, and 4 pieces of Da Zao. Bai Shao is the most common form of Shao Yao that is currently used.
