Key Characteristics: Directs the Lung qi downward and transforms phlegm to stop coughs and benefit the throat; restrains the Spleen and Intestinal qi to stop chronic diarrhea.

Cautions & Contraindications:

  • Contraindicated in exterior patterns or in those with internal accumulation and stagnation of damp-heat.

Actions & Indications:

  • Binds up the Intestines and stops diarrhea: for chronic diarrhea and dysenteric disorders. Can be used for both hot and cold patterns, depending on the other herbs in the formula. Can also be used for Intestinal wind with blood in the stool.
  • Contains the leakage of Lung qi, stops coughs, and improves the condition of the throat: for chronic cough, wheezing, and particularly for loss of voice. When combined with other herbs, can be used for cough due to phlegm-fire obstructing the Lungs.
